International Beverage Competition Judging Rules, 2011

1)  All beverages will be evaluated by the judges in “blind” tastings, meaning that the identities of the beverages will not be known to any of the judges.  Only the chief judges will know the identities of the beverages, with the bottles and judging glasses being identified by code numbers.

2)  All beverages will be evaluated by the judges in peer groups, meaning that all the Chardonnays will be evaluated alongside other Chardonnays, Merlots judged against other Merlots, and so forth.

3)  One or both of the chief judges will be responsible for assigning the submitted beverages to categories for peer group judging.

4)  However, once beverages are actually opened and tasted, it is possible that some beverages will be shifted into other categories, or that a new category will be opened in the course of the judging for a particular beverage that does not conform to one of the predetermined categories.  For example, if a Riesling is found to be moderately sweet once it is opened, and cannot be evaluated fairly alongside other dry Rieslings but likewise is not sufficiently sweet to be judged with other dessert beverages, then the chief judges may decide to create a new category for it.  The governing principle shall be that every beverage will be provided every chance to be evaluated fairly, without any skewing effect from the categorization process.  The objective of the competition is to identify excellent beverages by means of a fair judging, which often requires a fluid process, especially in the first years of a competition’s history.

5)  No beverage may be judged by a member of the judging panel, whose ownership of the winery in question exceeds 5%, or who is primarily and directly responsible for its production; i.e. the winemaker in charge of the particular beverage judged.  This does not mean that owners or winemakers cannot enter their beverages into the Competition.  Rather, they must simply identify any beverages that they have entered so that those beverages can be judged by a panel on which they do not participate, or by the chief judges if the beverages are not assigned to panels.

6)  If any judge believes that a beverage has been poured from a “corked” bottle (i.e., one tainted by TCA, or trichloranisol) or is oxidized or may otherwise unrepresentative of what the beverage can be at its best, another pour will be provided for all judges as long as additional bottles are available.

7)  Any disputes among the judges regarding beverage quality will be resolved by decisions made by one or both of the chief judges, and their decisions will be final.

8)  Each beverage will be evaluated by the judges in the context of four different initial judgments:
Gold Medal
Silver Medal
Bronze Medal
No Award

9)  Judging will be conducted either by all of the judges at once, or (if required by a large number of entries) by panels of judges that are assigned particular categories of beverages.

10)  If all judges evaluate the beverages at once, an initial vote will be taken by a show of hands, with each judge as well as the chief judges indicating a vote for one of the four possible judgments.  After those votes are tabulated and recorded, each judge and both chief judges will be permitted to argue for or against the quality of the beverage in an attempt to sway the other judges to his or her opinion.  After this discussion, a second vote will be taken and tabulated.  If one of the four judging options receives a plurality of votes, that will be the medal awarded to the beverage, unless a plurality of votes are registered in favor of not awarding the beverage any award.

11)  If the judging of a particular beverage results in a tie between two or more of the judging options (medal awards or no medal award), then the chief judges will confer with one another and decide in favor of one of the two or more options receiving the most votes.  The decision of the chief judges in such tie situations will be final.

12)  In addition to the medal round of judging, there shall also be a “Best of Show” round to determine the top beverages in meta-categories.  These meta-categories for the Best of Show round will be determined by one or both of the chief judges in advance of the competition (though they cannot be determined until the actual entries have been surveyed).  Examples of meta-categories would be, Best White Wine, Best Red Wine, and Best Wine of IBEC.  Other possibilities, depending upon actual entries, might include, Best Rosé Wine, Best Fortified Wine, Best Fruit Wine, Best Dessert Wine, and so forth.

13)  Every beverage that is awarded a Gold Medal will be eligible for the Best of Show round of judging.  Each beverage receiving a Gold Medal will be categorized by one or both of the chief judges for the final round of judging.

14)  The Best of Show round of judging will be conducted according to the acclamation method (rather than by the single vote plurality method), with all of the judges participating in the voting.  The acclamation method permits each judge to vote for as many beverages as he or she wishes within the category being judged, with the winner being the beverage that receives the most voted for the category being assessed.  If two or more beverages receive an identical number of votes by acclamation voting, a subsequent run-off vote will be taken, with only the top beverages being considered.  If this second round of acclamation voting also results in a tie vote, the chief judges will determine the winner.

15)  All of the winners of the Best of Show round (e.g., Best White Wine, Best Red Wine, etc.) will be included in one last vote by the acclamation method to determine the beverage judged Best of Show of the International Beverage Competition.
