Prof. Amy L. Mumma (Chief Judge 2011)

Amy Mumma has worked and taught in the international wine industry for more than 15 years. She is the Director and Founder of the Central Washington University Wine Program which offers the only four year accredited Global Wine Studies degree in the Untied States.  The Central Washington University Wine Program also offers courses for wine professionals and consumers.  She is president of Washington Wine Ratings, and was awarded the Professional Wine Woman 2005 and 2006 title in Paris at the International Wine Women Awards.  She continues to serve as a judge for the International Wine Woman Awards.   She wrote and hosted a series of four wine educational DVDs that are distributed internationally.   

Amy has a MBA in Wine Industry from the University of Bordeaux Business School, a Diploma of Tasting and Wine Studies from the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France, and the Advanced Certificate from the Wine and Spirit Education Trust in London.  She has published numerous articles for the wine industry and written five books on wine ranging from viticulture and enology, wine regions, marketing, sensory analysis and wine faults.

She was named Western Innovator 2008 by the Capital Press and was recognized by United States Representative Doc Hastings in the U.S. Congressional Record for service to the wine industry. Amy has been commended for her contributions to the industry by U.S. Senator Patty Murray and numerous State and Federal senators and representatives.  

She is a free-lance writer for publications including Vineyard & Winery Management and the North American correspondent for the Bordeaux wine magazine “L’Amateur Bordeaux.  Amy has judged numerous local, national and international wine competitions and is frequent presenter at national and international conferences.  She assists wineries in wine quality evaluation and sales and marketing techniques.  In addition, she works with private clients and corporations for wine tastings, evaluation, and investments.  


Dr. Donald J. Wood (Judge 2011)

In the year 1999, Dr. Wood joined his family’s pear growing farm in Washington State.  He and his family planted the first major plantings of vinifera in the Upper Wenatchee Valley in Washington and launched Icicle Ridge Winery.  Their first production of red wine was in the fall of 2000.  As Washington’s 120th wine producer, he has built the business to an annual production of 6,000 cases, specializing in Bordeaux varietals from the Columbia Valley and the Wahluke Slope in Washington.  Estate vineyards at Icicle Ridge Winery are producing quality ice wines from several varietals.

The wines have been recognized recently by being served at the President’s annual Christmas celebration at the White House in Washington D.C.  They have also been served three years in a row at the governor’s mansion in Washington State for Governor Christine Gregoire’s birthday celebration.  The 2008 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon was recently named among the top Cabernet Sauvignon’s in the State of Washington at the 2010 Seattle Wine Awards.  The wines of Icicle Ridge Winery have been recognized around the globe in numerous competitions.

Dr. Wood studied analytical chemistry and received his Ph.D. from the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho in the U.S. in 1993.  He has two patents related to innovative technologies for liquid separations.  Dr. Wood holds a World Wine Trade Certificate from Central Washington University and a Bachelor of Science from Northwest Nazarene University.


Mr. Adam Morris (Judge 2011)

Blurring the lines between agriculture, manufacturing, artisanal production and the complexities of FMCG mass marketing, end-to-end expertise in the wine supply chain is an increasingly scarce commodity. AMWC Research & Advisory aims to bridge the knowledge gap between wine growers and producers and the vital funding providers that support the industry.

Adam Morris, Principal of AMWC, holds a Bachelor of Finance and Economics Sydney University and has 13 years of professional experience. His career began in financial markets, firstly with Macquarie Bank and later with UBS in Sydney.

After completing post graduate studies in viticulture, Adam worked in wine production roles with Constellation, Evens & Tate, Villa Maria and Chateau Lynch-bages. Most recently, Adam was senior wine analyst with Rabobank, responsible for the publication of economic commentary and analysis on the Australian, New Zealand and global grape and wine industries.

In 2008, Adam graduated with honors and first in his class from the Wine MBA program in Bordeaux and was the first Australian to complete the program. Adam is currently studying towards the Master of Wine (MW) accreditation, the highest professional qualification attainable in the wine industry.


Mr. Robert Ord (Judge 2011)

Mr. Robert Ord has over fifteen years as a professional in the wine industry.  Mr. Ord is currently the Import Manager and Wine Educator for Vinum Importing and Distributing. A native of Cardiff, Wales, he had the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time in Europe and Africa.  

Mr. Ord began his wine career as the Bar Manager for St.Clouds restaurant in Seattle; eventually moving on to Wild Ginger where he rose to Lead Sommelier, helping the program earn the Wine Spectator’s Grand Award. He passed the Sommelier Diploma Program through the International Sommelier Guild and was invited to take part in their Teacher Education Program. In 2007 he began teaching classes for the International Sommelier Guild in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, and Las Vegas.

He holds the Advanced Sommelier designation from the Court of Master Sommeliers, and earned the prestigious Rudd Award for the highest exam score in the Cincinnati test in 2008. He was later awarded the first ever Johnston Medal for the highest cumulative grade in the USA for that year.

Mr. Ord actively consults with restaurants for to build and improve wine programs.   He judges for the Washington Wine Awards and is a key member of various wine tasting groups in Washington and Oregon. This has lead to him being a consultant for a Marine Surveying Company as the designated taster for insurance claims on wine container damage and fraud.


Mr. Thomas M. Gallagher (Judge 2011)

Tom has a multi-dimensional perspective on the global wine market.   As a wine importer, broker, and sales representative in Colorado, he has mastered the intricate interaction of tiers in the distribution channels in the United States.  As an accredited appraiser for Heritage Inventory and Appraisal Services with a specialty in wine and spirits, he works with the global market for collectible and investment wines.   His positions as director of retail strategies for drink.com and general manager for Total Beverage and Then Some, where he directed the sale of wine, beer, spirits and gourmet food, provided a foundation in the details of retail management and customer experience. He earned his Wine MBA from Bordeaux Management School in Bordeaux, France and a bachelor's degree in political science with a minor in economics and accounting from The College of the Holy Cross. He has participated in multiple sponsored trips for importers as well as London International Wine Festival and VINEXPO to asses wines for importing.  He has also taken the Advanced Certificate in Wine and Spirits course through the Wine & Spirits Education Trust in London, England and the Introductory Sommelier Course through the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Richard Leahy has been writing about wines of Virginia and the East since 1986. In 2007 he organized the Virginia Wine Experience in London which brought the top 64 Virginia wines there for leading British wine media and trade to taste. He was a regional editor for Kevin Zraly’s American Wine Guide, and was Mid-Atlantic and Southern Editor for the Oxford Companion to the Wines of North America. He was East Coast Editor of Vineyard & Winery Management and coordinated the seminar program for the Wineries Unlimited trade show, for over ten years. He is a member of the Society of Wine Educators and the Circle of Wine Writers. Mr. Leahy leads “Virginia Wine Expert” guided tours of Monticello AVA wineries, consults for wineries and wine regions and has a website and blog focused on wines of the East.

Mr. Henry Ho, has been involved in Wine Business in Hong Kong and Mainland for years. He participates in educational and cultural development of wine in such regions. Mr Ho is the founder core member of  Hong Kong Wine Merchants' Chamber of Commerce and always enthusiastic for assisting wine merchants exploring new efficient model to develop their own business in which that can be beneficial to the whole wine industry in China, the wine consumer as well.

Besides being a Bordeaux Wine School Certificate Holder and the Director of Hong Kong Zhenda International Cellar, Mr Henry Ho was appointed to be consultant of some agencies. His hardworking and contributions made himself to be an honour to the wine industry.

Damon Yuen, now the Chinese University, Peak Summit School, VTC of wine lecturer at various institutions, Also the British wine and spirit education trust WSET Foundation Institute lecturer and international judges of  sommeliers, bartenders Competition , wine consultant and wine & spirit column writer , obsessed with the wine over the years of drilling , and has worked in any of a number of 4,5-star hotel management and training, as a beverage manager for the post for 16 years, mainly during the responsible for wine related - sommelier, bartender training, deep wine-related knowledge to understand, and has just obtained the ( Court of Master Sommeliers ) certified sommelier title on 2009. Over the years I have been invited to visit several wine producing countries such as France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Australia with wine-related learning and absorbing the knowledge, training and teaching experience.

Ivan Hui has a Bachelor degree in Chemistry. As a wine professional, Ivan is a Certified Sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers, a Certified Specialist of Wine by the Society of Wine Educators in US, and WSET Certified. He just completed WSET Level 4, and is waiting for the result of AIWS accreditation.
As a founding member of the Hong Kong Wine Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce, Ivan chairs the Quality Standard Committee. He is the Director of E&C Wine Company Limited. The mission is to "Help People Appreciate Wine Better" through wine education, training and consultation.

Michael Franz is a wine writer, educator, and consultant. He is editor of Wine Review Online, wine columnist for France magazine, and a freelance contributor to many national and international wine magazines. He wrote nearly 300 articles as regular wine columnist for The Washington Post from 1994 to 2005. Franz left the Post in 2005 to help found Wine Review Online as editor. Wine Review Online has quickly become one of the world's most widely viewed wine publications, averaging 100,000 visitors and 2 million hits per month.

Franz teaches wine classes for Washington Wine Academy and L'Academie de Cuisine, and is also a wine consultant for 13 restaurants in the National Capital area with combined annual wine sales of more than $10 million. Jinpei Wen has worked in the catering and entertainment business for the past 31 years. He is the president of  Shadu Catering and Entertainment City; the Shadu Restaurant; Shadu Art Ensemble Dance Club; the Shadu Bar; and the Shadu Cinema.
 
He started business with one small restaurant with six employees in 1979. Within ten years, he expanded the business to include more than one thousand employees working for the many divisions of his own Shadu Catering and Entertainment City.
 
Wen’s Shadu Art Ensemble is a professional and well-known Chinese folk art culture performance group. Among the many honors and awards it has received, the Chinese government invited the Shadu Art Ensemble to give a special performance for government officials in the government “Zhongnanhai” building in Beijing in 1992. The Shadu Art Ensemble won the best “Civilization Folk Art Culture” award in China in 1998.
 
In addition to these businesses, Mr. Wen also started a Hong Kong beverage trading company, Dai Village Orchard, that makes apple vinegar and fruit juice.
 
Mr. Wen joined the Shenzhen Overseas Chinese International Association in 2005 and became a member of the Committee of Chinese Political Consultative Conference in 2006.

Paul Lukacs is a wine writer, educator, and advisor. Currently a columnist for an on-line wine site, he also is the author of two prize-winning books:  The Great Wines of America: The Top Forty Vintners, Vineyards, and Vintages (WW Norton) and American Vintage: The Rise of American Wine (Houghton Mifflin hardcover; WW Norton paperback).  American Vintage won the three major American wine “book of the year” awards in 2001—from the James Beard Foundation, Champagne Veuve Clicquot, and the International Association of Culinary Professionals.  The Great Wines of America, a finalist for wine book of the year from IACP, was awarded a Gourmand prize and was featured as a selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club.  Lukacs is currently working on a third book, Wine: A New History, scheduled for publication (by WW Norton) in 2012.  From 1994 to 2010, Lukacs wrote features, columns, and individual wine profiles for The Washington Times on a weekly basis.  From 2002 to 2005, he served as the wine columnist for Washingtonian magazine.  In 2007 and 2008, he served as wine editor for Saveur magazine.  And in 2005, he became a regular contributor to Wine Review Online, where he now contributes weekly reviews and co-authors a bi-weekly column on food and wine pairing.  In all of these roles, he has covered wines and winemaking all across the globe.  Lukacs also has served as a judge at numerous wine competitions, both in America and in Europe.  In addition, he is one of the organizers and founders of the International Oyster Wine Competition, held each November in Washington.  He lives in Baltimore.
